There's a day celebrating pizza (yum), siblings (awe), and even a day dedicated to opening an umbrella indoors (for real—it's March 13), so why not one celebrating packaging design? That "why not?" was the genesis of National Packaging Design Day, started in 2015 by Design Packaging and the Dieline to celebrate all things packaging design. It's even got an official listing on NationalDayCalendar.com, where you can go to make sure you never miss national unicorn day again.
Here at Distinct Packaging we don't need a special day to celebrate great packaging and packaging design, but we're happy to jump on the bandwagon. Here are three ways to celebrate National Packaging Design Day on May 7.
1. Fire Up the Hashtag #PackagingDesignDay.
It's an unproven fact that 80 percent of the national days on the calendar wouldn't exist without hashtags and social media. Get into the spirit by tagging your favorite packaging design—your own or from designers and brands you admire—on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites. Maybe it's the color combination, artwork, ingenious use of design, how the packaging matches the branding, or something else. No matter the reason you love this or that particular packaging design, don't forget to tag your favorite packaging design photos on May 7. And be sure to follow @Distinct.Packaging on Instagram to see the packaging design we're celebrating.
2. Spend Some Time With Packaging Design Experts.
Get a fresh perspective on packaging design by devoting some time to learning more about the art and science of packaging design. To do so, check out these 6 Books to Read on Packaging Design and 5 Sites to Bookmark for Packaging Design Inspiration, both of which lead you deeper into design for packaging. At Distinct Packaging, we also have our own series of educational stories meant to help you use packaging design in conjunction with growing your business, including Why Custom Packaging Is Important in Branding Your Business and How Custom Packaging Drives Repeat and New Business. Learn more about design itself with our posts on color, monochromatic color, pattern, photography, and when to use a white or kraft box. Oh, and don't miss this rundown of Mistakes NOT to Make When Designing a Box.
3. Design Your Own Box or Packaging.
You know you're going to want to eat a donut on National Donut Day this year (it's June 7, FYI), so why not design a box on National Packaging Day? At Distinct Packaging, the process couldn't be easier (and it's calorie-free). Simply pick your box type and size (or bag, or tissue paper, or coaster), and then use our design program or yours to create the box of your dreams before ordering exactly the number you need (order just 1 or thousands). If you get stuck, simply contact us via phone at (877) 464-1959 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you have neither the time or inclination to design your own box, no worries. Take advantage of our Design Assistant service—send us your creative assets, such as artwork, colors, or concept—and one of our designers will create your box for you to approve and order. Likewise if you need a few extras added to your packaging (anything from inserts to embossing to odd sizing), we can assist you by pulling together a quote.
At Distinct Packaging we like to think of every day as National Packaging Design Day, and we're happy to celebrate with you today and every day! #PackagingDesignDay
