How Distinct Packaging Helped Golden Ratio Make Its Best Box Yet

When Golden Ratio, a grain-free, dairy-free supplement line started in 2014 by entrepreneur Bizzie Gold of Buti Yoga fame, needed custom boxes to ship their product, the company first went the traditional route, working with local box printers on a custom design.

"The process was just so long," says Golden Ratio art director Ginalyn McNamara. From purchasing the cutting tools to laying out the design and waiting for the final product, "it was an ongoing process for weeks," McNamara says. By the time she finally got the boxes in hand, much of the excitement for the original design had dissipated during the long wait.

McNamara found Distinct Packaging through a Google search and was impressed with the 3-D rendering system that allows customers to see their custom-designed box from every angle, including what it looks like when folded and unfolded. Still, she wanted proof that what she was seeing on-screen was what she'd receive as a box, so she called and talked to Randy Barron, Distinct Packaging's director of product innovation, and then ordered one box.

"When I got my box, it was super quick, which was really exciting for me. Having seen the real-time proof and getting the product in such a quick turnaround—the design is still exciting," she says.

She chose to print the outside of the box black, with the company logo and social info in a contrasting white. It’s the inside of the box where the real surprise comes: McNamara designed a brilliant galaxy pattern with elements of the company’s golden ratio line art overlaid.

In addition to the quick print time, the print and box quality really blew her away too. "The print quality—I was amazed, especially the interiors of the galaxy and the cosmos." That she didn't have to purchase the die tools or go back and forth with production was an added bonus, she says.

Perhaps most importantly, with the streamlined timelines from box design to delivery, the Golden Ratio team can now share their enthusiasm over a new box design with their customers in real-time via social media and then be able to deliver the goods.

Before, McNamara explains, they were only able to tell customers "OK it's coming out in 30 days or a month or mid-spring. Now, it's literally going out this week."

After the success with the cosmos custom boxes, which are shipping full of protein powder blends in flavors such as Chocolate Bliss and Salted Caramel Bliss to top public relations firms in New York as part of a marketing campaign, the Golden Ratio team is also planning on doing an additional bulk order and creating a couple of different boxes, including some for Buti Yoga.

McNamara says the team is batting around ideas for a custom box to go with a Los Angeles pop-up event too, and it's the sheer flexibility of the Distinct Packaging model that allows them to go in so many different directions.

While McNamara says she loved the ease of technology, she also appreciated being able to speak with someone directly, in her case Barron, about the product and process. "These days, when everything is so digital and you don't really talk to people, being able to directly talk to him was reassuring. These boxes aren’t cheap. You want a nice quality product. I’ve been searching for something like this for a really, really long time."
