When Mary Nicolello, marketing coordinator at Vigon International, found Distinct Packaging through a Google search, she was in a tight spot.
Nicolello had been working with a packaging company to design a branded welcome box for Vigon to send to new employees and new customers. Vigon, founded in 1988, is a fragrance, flavor, and ingredient manufacturing supplying company based in East Stroudsburg, Penn., that's recently branched into aromatherapy ingredients.
After a lot of confusing back-and-forth and "incredibly long" lead and turnaround times with the packaging company, Nicolello said she finally received her sample only to discover that it wasn't a shipping box like she’d requested but a flimsy paperboard one instead.
The packaging company had steered her to the wrong product. Frustrated and almost out of time, she reached out to Distinct Packaging by filling out its request a quote form online.
"I got a call and an email almost immediately after that," Nicolello said. "The gentleman I spoke to on the phone was very concerned about what we needed and how quickly he could get it to us because the project was supposed to be almost finished. So it was nice to work with people who actually cared about turnaround time."
Nicolello designed Vigon's welcome box on Adobe Illustrator. Using the dielines sent from Distinct Packaging, she said she was able to put it on the dielines herself—"laying out everything exactly how I wanted." This avoided some of the confusing back-and-forth she'd experienced at the first packaging company, a process that sometimes introduced errors instead of fixing them, she said.
That balance of customer service availability—"It's nice to work with another person instead of trusting an ordering form to get everything correct"—and autonomy in the design process really impressed Nicolello.
But before she put in the order for 2,500 boxes, Nicolello wanted to see the finished product for herself and ordered a physical sample. She was pleased to find it was "exactly what we wanted and exactly what we had envisioned," she said. "Sometimes when you design something on the computer, the printed version looks a little different, but I felt like this was pretty much spot on."
The Vigon boxes are filled with information about the company, including a product list, a handwritten note, the company mascot, and a few other branded odds and ends. Making sure the Vigon brand message was reinforced by the box was important to Nicolello. "We have pretty distinctive branding so it was important to us to make sure that was noticeable."
In the end, Distinct Packaging delivered, Nicolello said. "We needed something that we could design and that could be sent through the mail and that was strong enough and recognizable as our company. We are super happy with the final product. Everybody really loves them."
